Is there a household remedy to treat discoloured teeth?

The easiest action is of course to try to reduce those daily habits and so to prevent gradual discolouration. Once the teeth have been discoloured, then the only option that really helps is to visit a dentist. Household products such as baking powder or bicarbonate of soda are certainly cheap and tempting. They are, however, dangerous: although they do make certain teeth appear brighter, these household products act like sandpaper and grind off the tooth enamel. The result: the teeth are damaged. Even ‘tooth whitening’ toothpastes often contain aggressive abrasive particles that can brighten teeth in the short term. A negative consequence is that in future the roughened tooth enamel absorbs stains even more rapidly. So the recommendation is very simple: don’t touch!

By using tooth whitening toothpastes with aggressive abrasive particles, the tooth enamel is abraded. Deep scratches also develop.
