How bright should my teeth be?
Your tooth colour should fit harmoniously with your skin type and hair colour as well as with your actual age. The same applies here: which level of tooth brightness actually fits and is attractive is often assessed very subjectively. There is no absolute measure of the ‘correct’ tooth colour and your own preference usually determines it. Additional ‘tricks’ can also be used. A vividly coloured lipstick creates an optical illusion for the observer and the teeth immediately appear brighter! Suntanned skin also makes the teeth appear brighter.
In the photo of the smile with vividly contrasting lipstick (right), the teeth appear brighter to the observer than without lipstick (left).
If you wish to brighten your teeth, the first step is always an assessment by your dentist. Only he or she can assess whether your teeth and gums are healthy and whether your teeth are even suitable for whitening. For some discolouration, very simple and economical treatments such as a professional tooth cleaning and polishing can sometimes be effective. These treatments can usually increase brightness by one level on the colour scale. And bleaching can achieve brightening by 2 to 4 levels depending on the initial colour.
